The wall was white, as it had been since he had moved into the apartment when he was twenty, but it didn't stop Kole from staring at it like it had turned a fine shade of puce. After what seemed like hours, but was actually a time period of twenty minutes, Kole tired of the plain white wall and stood up hauntingly, even though there was no one there to be witness to his haunted stance. It came naturally to him.
Kole walked to the door and pressed his ear to the smooth light wood. He could easily slip a shadow under to be his personal spy, just as easily as he could turn the knob and interrupt the slumber party behind it, but he was sure that Tibias could actually get answers from the girl. For some reason humans trusted the man. Couldn't be his looks, if one was to take solely from looks, Kole would have to be the most trust worthy looking one of the two. Simple gut feeling usually warned people that Kole was just as likely to rip a new, inconvenient hole in their chest as much as Sharpe was likely to offer a cup of tea and a short rant about some trivial topic.
Murmurs could be herd on the other side of the door. Carahya's voice was low for a moment before stopping. A small pause, then Tibias' soft chuckle. Kole wrinkled his nose, this woman was a captive, on he other side. She was against them, and here Tibias was making friends. Suddenly the voices stopped and Kole could hear rustling. He realized that Tibias or Carahya were walking to the door. Kole snapped his head away from the door and almost ran into the other room just as the door squeaked open.
"My God, Tarrant, will you ever develop that interesting thing called subtlety?" Tibias said flatly, followed by a giggle from Carahya. Kole glared past Tibias at her. She simply smiled at him, knowing it would irritate the reaper.
"Looks like we're going to be on the same team, Mr. Shadow-ass," she sneered.
"I would advise you to never call me that again, that is, if you enjoy your head firmly attached to your pathetic little neck," Kole replied, taking hold of Tibias' cuff and dragging him close before whispering so only he could hear, "What is the meaning of this?"
"I do think that when I properly explain what Ms. Faroth has just told me, you will understand, but for the present, she needs to be brought before the Council," Tibias said plainly.
"What?" Carahya asked, not understanding, "I thought I could leave!"
"I am very sorry about that Ms. Faroth," Tibias apologized, looking at her with a sad smile, "But a young woman who has such strong magic should appear before the Council to either receive a license or to enlist,"
"What if I don't want to?" she cried, looking at Kole and back to Tibias.
"I am afraid you have no choice in the matter, it is the law, you understand," Tibias tried to explain while Kole still glared at the poor girl.
"What do you mean? I'm still a prisoner? But I haven't done anything wrong!" she pleaded to Tibias.
"No, you are not a prisoner, Ms. Faroth, but if you try to escape or not attend the meeting, we may have to use force to prevent you,"
"You're no better than him!" she growled at him, eyebrows furrowing. She could feel a slight prickle in her eyes and realized in her rage she had changed their color.
"We are the law, I am simply doing my job, now, if you would please follow me?"
"Yeah, whatever," Carahya said, "Where are you taking me? Prison?" Tibias chuckled, enraging the young woman.
"Oh, my goodness no," he assured her, "We are going to pick up Ms. Trean and Mr. Holligan at the office and inform the Council of your existence," Tibias opened the door and Kole walked outside without saying a word. Carahya noticed it was daylight, she must have been in the room for hours.
"I'm hungry," she said, blinking at the light as she walked out of the apartment. She was still in Boston, which she found comforting. At least she couldn't get lost in case she decided to chance an escape.
"Well then, we will just have to remedy that will we not?" Tibias asked, grabbing a cane that was left just outside the door. Carahya knew from watching him walk across the parking lot that he clearly did not need it to help him walk, like he had when she saw him while she was a rat.
"Why do you have that?" she asked, pointing at the cane.
"I enjoy it, besides I find it gives me a certain air of gentlemanly stature,"
"Tibias, it makes you look old," Kole said blandly.
