The claxon of a ringing phone greeted Royal as he opened the portal back into the office. He bolted across the room and answered it before Keera could enter the room.
“Buddy the elf speaking,” the terrow answered in mock seriousness. “What’s your favorite color?” Keera rolled her eyes and closed the portal door. “Hmm, I’ve never heard of that color, Tibs. Maybe you should get your eye checked.” The angel made her way to Kole’s desk, carefully replacing the rune in the proper drawer. “Tonight, Tibs, really? I was hoping to grab some sleep tonight… Jim-jams?... Pajamas, right. I supposed Keera won’t need those if she stays with you, loverboy.” Royal’s grin faltered slightly and his face paled in response to what Keera could only assume was a threat from the scholarly Brit. “No need, Tibs. Your girlfriend’s here with me… Right, I’m sure she’ll be thrilled to here that… See you soon.” The elf hung up the phone.
“What was that all about?” the angel asked impatiently.
“Tibias wants us to meet him and Kole at his house in Newton,” the blonde man replied. “He said you should fly us out there.” Royal stared back at the phone, lost in his own thoughts.
“Royal?” Keera interjected, slightly concerned. “Is anything wrong?”
“It’s probably nothing,” he said with a shrug. “I just got this really weird feeling when I was talking to Tibs, but I can’t figure out what it is. It’s probably just my imagination.” The pair stood in silence. Something in the elf’s tone disturbed the angel, but she brushed the feeling off; she was not going to be taken in by yet another of Royal’s practical jokes.
“I don’t suppose he gave you directions.” Keera powered her computer up, hoping Tibias’ address was on file.
“You’re his girlfriend,” Royal replied as he plopped into his own chair, “shouldn’t you know important stuff like this.”
“There is still a great deal that I don’t know about Tibias.” Keera was only half listening to the terrow as she scrolled through the Council directory. Stopping at the S’s, she copied the desired address and pasted it into Google maps.
“And, there’s a ‘great deal’ that he doesn’t know about you apparently.” Royal spun his office chair lazily. “Speaking of which, do you have a brilliant plan about how to tell your boyfriend what we learned about Deus Ignegena without revealing that we: A. used the portal without permission, B. visited a hot spot of illegal supernatural trade, and, this one is my personal favorite, C. got the information by bribing and threatening your old supplier. I found that particular tid-bit very interesting, though I’m still trying to figure out what type of demon blood tickled your fancy.” Keera took one final look at the map before turning off the computer and rising from her chair.
“I suppose we’ll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it.”
“Bridges?” Royal responded with a smirk, “I thought that we were going to fly to Tibias’ house.”
